Many commonly used English Words have a completely different meaning in the planning context. Here are a few examples:

  1. Compatible
    1. English – consistent or in keeping with something else.
    2. Planning – anything large that can be squeezed into small surroundings. Grey brick in redbrick and pebbledash surroundings. A planner would foresee no difficulty in crossbreeding a wolfhound and Jack Russel terrier.
  2. Guidance:
    1. English - official advice: an official recommendation indicating how something should be done or what sort of action should be taken in a particular circumstance
    2. Planning - depending on context: 1: Government Planning Policy Guidance (PPG) – see ‘Requirements (a)’. 2: Supplementary Planning Guidance – ideals that ensure that development is harmonious with it's surroundings. May be applied provided it is not "too onerous" to the developer.
  3. Must:
    1. English –   verb. be compelled: to be compelled to do something because of a rule or law.
    2. Planning – modifier. inverts the meaning of the second following word. For example ‘must be avoided’ is modified to ‘may be encouraged’
  4. Onerous:
    1. English – law: having disadvantageous obligations: involving obligations that are more disadvantageous than advantageous.
    2. Planning – may result in a minor disadvantage to a developer. As in ‘We considered requiring the developer to spend £250 on an arboricultural assessment but considered this too onerous when the value of the land with planning permission would only be £120,000’
  5. Requirement:
    1. English  - something insisted upon: something that is obligatory or demanded
    2. Planning – having roughly the same force as a traffic light in Rome
  6. Sustainable Development:
    1. English – “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
    2. Planning – cram houses in at the highest possible density, and if any land remains, use it for a cycle path.
